STRASBURG – Appalachian Physical Therapy invites the residents of the region to try out the pain relieving laser therapy.
This Wednesday and next Wednesday, the office at Stony Pointe Way 105, Suite 211 will allow people to receive 15 to 20 minute Class IV laser therapy for free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We want people to understand what it is like,” said David Brewster, co-owner and physical therapist in the Appalachian Physical Therapy office in Strasbourg. “That gives you the chance to try it out.”
Class IV laser therapy works by essentially heating the affected tissue around the target area. The process is known as photobiomodulation.
In an instructional video on the process, Brewster explains: “When light penetrates the tissue, photons are scattered, reflected and absorbed. Lasers penetrate deep tissue structures. Light entering the tissues can be absorbed by melanin, hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, and water. Energy is broken down by heat, which creates warmth in the tissue. “
Laser therapy can treat a variety of conditions including neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, sciatica, arthritis, bursitis, spinal disc injuries, TMJ dysfunction, sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, soft tissue damage, and more.
“If there is tissue damage other than the eyes and organs – or if it has something to do with a skeletal muscle, it can help,” Brewster said.
Brewster said he had personal experience with laser therapy, which he used himself after a tear in his knee in the early 2000s. He had walked for six months with no improvement and could not run a mile without “significant pain.” Since he had to train for a race that he wanted to run, he used laser treatment and it worked.
“I was able to train and complete the 50-mile race painlessly,” he said. “I hardly have any pain now. I could do pretty much anything I wanted to do. “
Brewster said he would probably be ready for a knee replacement now if he hadn’t gotten laser treatments.
That played a role when Brewster advocated the use of laser therapy in his Strasbourg office.
“It was something we were looking for. Based on my personal experience with the laser, we wanted to offer this opportunity to other people as well. It’s not cheap, but given the results that we have been able to see and have experienced that we have now seen with others, we had to do it, ”he said. “We want to give people every opportunity to feel better, feel better, move better, and get back to all the things they want to do. This is just another tool in the toolbox to make this easier. “
Brewster said he recommends it to patients after their second or third visit, and recommends combining treatments with physical therapy. However, people can still opt for treatments without physical therapy.
Patients can receive treatments in packages of three, six, or 10 sessions.
