Pope had a temporary fever 3 days after bowel surgery

ROM (AP) – Pope Francis had a temporary fever three days after the bowel surgery, but routine tests and scans turned out negative, the Vatican said Thursday.

The Vatican’s daily update states that Francis continued to eat and move unaided and even greeted young cancer patients at the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome.

However, spokesman Matteo Bruni said Francis temporarily had a “fever episode” on Wednesday night.

“This morning he was routinely and microbiologically examined, as well as a chest and abdominal exam, which turned out to be negative,” the statement said.

Francis, 84, had half of his colon removed Sunday because the Vatican called a “severe” narrowing of the colon. He is expected to stay at the Gemelli, which has a special suite for Popes, all week provided there are no complications.

Doctors have said a fever could indicate signs of infection or other post-operative complications, although the Vatican statement stressed that the episode was temporary and that Francis’s treatment was proceeding as planned.

The original Italian version of the Vatican Declaration referred to a “fever episode” while the English translation said that Francis “temporarily had a high temperature”. The Vatican spokesman said the Italian was the exact, official version and a subsequent version of the English translation removed the reference that Francis’ temperature was “high”.

The statement states that Francis’ recovery is proceeding as planned and that “at this particular moment he looks upon all those who suffer and expresses his closeness to the sick, especially those in need of care most”.

Francis enjoys relatively robust health, although he lost the top of a lung to an infection in his youth. He also suffers from sciatica, or nerve pain, which makes him walk with a pronounced limp.
