NYSCOPBA: Attica inmate injured Sergeant, 7 officers

ATTICA, NY (WIVB) – The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) says seven officers and one sergeant were injured when a potentially drunk inmate attacked them at the Attica Correctional Facility.

The union says that on June 18, an officer was conducting a medical escort when they noticed an inmate at his cell door. The 29-year-old man, who was serving a seven-year prison sentence for criminal gun possession in Westchester County, appeared to be drunk.

When the officer turned to alert medical personnel, the inmate reached through the cell grids and stabbed the officer in the eye, NYSCOPBA says.

More staff then responded and entered the cell when the inmate tried to beat her, but was handcuffed to the infirmary, according to NYSCOPBA.

According to the union, the detainee continued to struggle with the staff, but he eventually “complied and was kept in a hospital room.”

An officer was taken to the ECMC with hip and shoulder pain and knee swelling, and a sergeant was taken to the medical center with a possible broken thumb.

Six other officers suffered minor injuries, the union said.

“Another day, another attack on the staff. The narrative doesn’t change a bit and will continue until the DOCCs and our elected officials make the necessary policy changes to protect employees. Provide employees with meaningful tools that deter these violent, unprovoked attacks, many of which only occur when employees are simply trying to help inmates. Our members deserve a lot more protection than they currently receive. “

Mark Deburgomaster, Vice President of the Western Region of NYSCOPBA

According to NYSCOPBA, the detainee has been moved to a special housing unit since the incident and faces disciplinary action.
